Panama officially announced this Tuesday its 26-player squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s footballing history as it prepares for its second appearance on the global stage.

Head coach Thomas Christiansen unveiled the roster for the tournament hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico and Canada, a competition set to feature an expanded format with 48 national teams.

For “Los Canaleros“, as the Panamanian team is well-known, this 2026 edition represents a significant milestone: their second qualification for a senior World Cup, following their debut at Russia 2018.

Coach Christiansen has meticulously constructed a squad that largely retains a core of proven footballers. This strategic continuity is evident in the inclusion of key figures such as defender Fidel Escobar and midfielder Aníbal Godoy, both of whom gained valuable minutes during the 2018 tournament. Their leadership and on-field experience are anticipated to be crucial in guiding the team through the demanding group stage.

Alongside these veterans, the squad features the dynamic and talented attacking midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla, widely regarded as one of Panama’s most influential creative forces. Carrasquilla’s ability to control the midfield and orchestrate attacks will be vital to Panama’s offensive strategy. Other notable inclusions that underscore the blend of experience and emerging talent include seasoned goalkeeper Luis Mejía, who brings an undeniable calm to the backline, and promising young forward José Fajardo, whose pace and goal-scoring instincts could provide crucial moments.

Panama has been drawn into Group L, a challenging ensemble that includes formidable opponents: Ghana, Croatia, and England.

The debut match for Panama is scheduled for June 17 against the African powerhouse Ghana, a fixture that will immediately gauge the team’s readiness and competitive spirit. Following this opener, they will face Croatia, a nation with a rich World Cup pedigree, and finally, England, one of the tournament favorites. Each match will offer a unique set of challenges, demanding strategic adaptation and unwavering resilience from the Panamanian side. The preparation camp has reportedly focused on defensive solidity and quick transitions, recognizing the offensive prowess of their group adversaries.

Expanding to 48 teams for the first time, the FIFA World Cup 2026 promises to be the largest and most geographically extensive World Cup in history, spreading matches across multiple cities in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

For Panama, participation in such an event not only elevates the profile of its national sport but also serves as an immense source of national pride and unity. The team’s journey to this World Cup has been characterized by dedication and overcoming regional challenges, making their qualification a testament to the hard work of players, coaches, and the entire footballing infrastructure in the country.

The overarching objective for the Panamanian Football Federation and the coaching staff is to solidify the team’s performance and presence in the international football arena, building on the experience gained from their inaugural participation. The ambition extends beyond mere participation, aiming to demonstrate growth and competitive spirit against some of the world’s footballing powerhouses.
